Hedonism and 'The Coffee Problem'

I've got a friend, let's call him Dakota, who likes to talk about ethics with me. I'm taking an ethics course right now, so we'll be sure to annoy those around us in the upcoming future. I may end up writing about those conversations if I find them interesting enough, but for now I'd like to talk about a conversation we've had many times before.
Dakota's ethical stance is weird, and I don't fully understand it myself, but he's kind of a hedonistic emotivist. He's hedonistic because he uses his own moral compass as a means for making decisions that optimize his own personal utility and direct him to a fulfilling life. In other words, h
